Boson de Higgs : la fin de la traque

Mercredi 4 juillet, les deux expériences principales de l'accélérateur de particules du CERN, le LHC, près de Genève annonceront l'état de leur chasse à une particule mystère. Celle-ci est la pièce manquante au bel échafaudage construit par les physiciens pour décrire le monde de l'infiniment petit.

Baptisée boson de Brout-Englert-Higgs, du nom de ses géniteurs théoriciens en 1964, elle est souvent nommée plus simplement boson de Higgs. Elle joue un rôle majeur dans la nature car, sans elle, les particules n'auraient pas de masse. C'est comme si des objets initialement sans masse traversaient un milieu visqueux et se mettaient donc à peser de plus en plus lourd. La manière d'agréger la "boue" dépendant de l'interaction avec le fameux boson. Ainsi l'électron devient l'objet que nous connaissons et peut ensuite donner naissance à des atomes, des molécules... Bref à toute la matière qui nous entoure.
Mais bien que prévu il y a près de cinquante ans, ce mécanisme impliquant une nouvelle particule n'a jamais pu être confirmé. Au CERN la traque a commencé véritablement en 2010.

LA FIN D'UNE HISTOIRE
Alors qu'aucune information précise n'a officiellement été donnée, le site de la revue Nature affirmait hier qu'une détection de nouvelle particule serait bien annoncée mercredi. Les données confirmeraient une masse de 125 GeV, dans les unités utilisées par les physiciens, soit un poids 133 fois plus élevé qu'un proton, constituant élémentaire des noyaux atomiques. Ce serait donc la même masse que lors des précédentes annonces de décembre 2011. La différence est que la certitude de ne pas avoir à faire à un coup du sort, c'est-à-dire une facétie de la nature qui conduirait à prendre un indice pour une preuve, serait plus importante. Mais rien ne dit que les expériences auront atteint le niveau exigé pour parler de "découverte".

Au cas où, sans doute, les "pères" de ce boson, François Englert et Peter Higgs, seront présents au CERN pour l'annonce des derniers résultats.
Les expériences concurrentes au Fermilab près de Chicago ont, elles aussi, donné leurs résultats. La plage d'énergie est moins précise qu'au CERN mais compatible avec les 125 GeV. Le niveau de certitude n'est également pas suffisant pour crier victoire.

Si la nouvelle est confirmée cela marquerait alors la fin d'une histoire et le début d'une nouvelle. Il faudra en effet vérifier précautionneusement qu'il s'agit bien du fameux boson. Car le boson est futé, si l'on peut dire. Il est créé au LHC par la collision violente de protons les uns contre les autres à des vitesses proches de la lumière. Son apparition est rare et de toute façon il disparaît immédiatement, se désintégrant en plusieurs particules, déjà bien connues. Or plusieurs autres processus peuvent donner naissance au même genre de débris. Il s'agit donc de décortiquer patiemment les scènes de collision pour affiner le portrait du nouveau venu. Les premières informations sur ces détails seront également très attendues mercredi.

Chadral Rinpoche
